about the course text box

Neonatal shock is one of the most critical—and often misunderstood—conditions NICU nurses face.

This 4-hour, case-based course takes the complexity of neonatal hemodynamics and makes it clear, practical, and actionable.

You’ll move from foundational physiology to bedside decision-making, gaining the confidence to recognize shock early and intervene effectively.

what's in store for you text box

What You’ll Learn:

The Foundations: Normal blood pressure regulation, neonatal hemodynamics, oxygen delivery and uptake, and the shift from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism.

Understanding Shock: What shock really means in neonates, how physiology breaks down, and the compensatory mechanisms that precede decompensation.

Types of Shock: Hypovolemic, cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive, and mixed shock—explained through real-world case scenarios.

Management Strategies: Fluid bolus therapy, recognizing when fluids aren’t enough, and escalation of support.

Vasoactive Medications: Practical pharmacology of dopamine, dobutamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, milrinone, vasopressin, and hydrocortisone—when to use each, nursing considerations, and what to monitor.

Case Integration: Step-by-step clinical scenarios to connect physiology to bedside care.

🧑‍⚕️ This Course is Perfect For:

  • NICU nurses preparing for certification exams (RNC-NIC, CCRN-N)

  • New graduate nurses learning hemodynamic foundations

  • Experienced NICU nurses wanting to deepen knowledge of vasoactive drugs

  • NNP and CNS students seeking a structured physiology review

📚 You’ll Learn:

✅ The foundations of neonatal blood pressure & hemodynamics—what makes babies different from older children and adults.

✅ How oxygen delivery and uptake really work, and what happens when supply doesn’t meet demand.

✅ The step-by-step physiology of shock—from compensation to decompensation.

✅ The types of shock in the NICU and how to recognize each one at the bedside.

✅ Why hypotension is a late sign—and the earlier clinical cues that nurses should never miss.

✅ When and how to use a fluid bolus, and when it can actually cause harm.

✅ A deep dive into the vasoactive drugs we use in neonates: what they do, when to use them, and nursing watch-points.

✅ Practical case studies that connect the physiology to real babies you’ll see in the NICU.

Nursing considerations for preparing, titrating, and monitoring vasoactive infusions with confidence.

✅ How to advocate for your patient using physiology, not just numbers, to guide the care plan.

Meet your Instructor

Hi, I’m Amanda! I created this course because I know firsthand how overwhelming shock can feel in the NICU.

Early in my career, shock was one of the most intimidating topics I faced—both in the classroom and even more so at the bedside. I remember caring for critical babies on multiple drips and feeling like the "why" behind the orders wasn’t clear. Over time, digging into the physiology of perfusion, oxygen delivery, and oxygen consumption transformed the way I understood my patients. And learning how vasoactive drugs really work—beyond “just starting dopamine”—completely changed the way I thought and taught others.

Now, with over 16 years of experience as a NICU nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist, I’ve been where you are—and I’ve come out the other side with clarity and confidence. My goal is to help you do the same.

When you take this course, my hope is that you’ll walk away:

Feeling more confident in your assessment skills.

Understanding the why and how behind vasoactive drug use.

Ready to approach the sickest babies with clarity instead of fear.

And because I know learning is ongoing, you’ll have lifetime access to this course so you can always come back for a refresher whenever you need it most.
